Ugandan Chapati

Posted by Manjeri Skincare Team on

Benefits: Ugandan chapati is a comforting staple that supports skin health through simple, nourishing ingredients. The combination of carbohydrates and healthy fats provides sustained energy, which helps reduce stress-related skin issues. When made with a blend of whole wheat flour, it adds fiber to support gut health, a key factor in maintaining clear and balanced skin. The light use of oil helps support moisture retention, contributing to a naturally soft and supple complexion.

Skin Concern: Skin barrier support and moisture retention

Prep Time: 20 minutes | Cook Time: 20 minutes | Serves: 4

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (or 1 cup all-purpose + 1 cup whole wheat flour)

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 tbsp sugar

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

  • ¾ cup warm water

For Cooking:

  • 2 to 3 tbsp vegetable oil or ghee

Instructions:

  • Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, combine flour, salt, and sugar. Add oil and gradually mix in warm water until a soft dough forms. Knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Cover and let rest for 15 to 20 minutes to relax the gluten.

  • Shape the Chapati: Divide the dough into equal portions and roll each into a ball. Roll each ball into a thin circle, lightly brush with oil, then fold and coil it to create layers. Let rest briefly, then roll out again into a round chapati.

  • Cook: Heat a flat pan over medium heat. Place the chapati onto the pan and cook for about 1 to 2 minutes on each side, pressing lightly and brushing with oil until golden brown with soft, flaky layers.

  • Serve: Serve warm alongside beans, vegetables, or stews for a balanced, nourishing meal.

Shopping Tips:

  • Choose high-quality flour for better texture and elasticity

  • Opt for unrefined oils or ghee for added richness and nutritional value

  • If using whole wheat flour, look for finely milled varieties for softer chapati

Cooking Tips:

  • Resting the dough is key for achieving soft, pliable chapati

  • Do not skip the layering step, as it creates the signature flaky texture

  • Keep cooked chapati covered with a cloth to retain warmth and softness

This warm, flaky chapati is a nourishing everyday staple that pairs beautifully with hearty dishes while supporting a steady, healthy glow from within.
